The 2024 Paris Paralympics got underway with a glittering opening ceremony on Wednesday, 28 August, with the event taking place outside the confines of a stadium for the first time ever.
The sporting action got underway the following day, in which medals were distributed in cycling, swimming, table tennis and taekwondo. Netherlands’ Caroline Groot won the first gold medal of the competition while China took the early lead on Day 1 with four gold medals.

The opening day also witnessed Zakia Khudadadi win the Refugee Paralympic Team its first ever medal at the Paralympic Games after her opponent withdrew ahead of the bronze medal playoff in the women’s taekwondo 44-47kg category.
While there were no medals for India on the opening day, shooters Avani Lekhara and Mona Agarwal opened India’s account at the Paris Games after winning gold and bronze respectively in the women’s 10m air rifle standing SH1 event on Friday.
Sprinter Preethi Pal and shooter Manish Narwal would add to India’s medal tally on the same day, winning women’s 100m T35 bronze and men’s 10m air pistol SH1 silver respectively.
