India’s Avani Lekhara, who won the gold medal at the Tokyo Games, stormed into the shooting final of Women’s 10m Air Rifle Standing SH1 at Paris Paralympics 2024 on Friday after finishing second in the qualification event. India’s Mona Agarwal also qualified for the final by finishing fifth – the top eight shooters from the qualification advance to the final.

Avani, who led till Series 5, eventually finished second with a total score of 625.8, missing out on the Paralympics qualification record of China’s Zhang Cuiping by 0.2 points. Mona finished fifth with a total score of 623.1.

Ukraine’s Iryna Shchetnik set a new Paralympic qualification record with a score of 627.5 to top the qualification. Slovakia’s Veronika Vadovicova was third (624.2), while Korea’s Yunri Lee (624) was fourth.
Other shooters who reached the final were Anna Benson of Sweden (620.5), Yixin Zhong of China (617.6), and Zhang Cuiping (617.6).
The final will take place on Friday at 3.15 PM IST.
Avani will aim for a second gold medal at the Paralympics as he is the defending champion in the 10m Air Rifle Standing SH1 event. Three years back in Tokyo, she became the first Indian woman to win gold at the Paralympics or Olympics, after clinching the the 10m Air Rifle Standing SH1. She had scored 249.6 in the final, breaking the Paralympic record and equalling the world record.
