At its September 9 ‘It’s Glowtime’ event, Apple unveiled its latest iPhone models, including the iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 16 Pro Max, each powered by the newly introduced A18 and A18 Pro chipsets.
These new chips are poised to deliver significant performance enhancements, marking a considerable leap forward from the previous generation.

Apple claims that this configuration provides a 30 per cent increase in performance compared to the A16 Bionic chip found in the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus. Notably, the A18 is also said to achieve this performance boost while using 30 per cent less power, making it more efficient overall.
In terms of graphics, the A18’s GPU is reported to deliver a 40 per cent improvement in performance over its predecessor. This GPU supports hardware-accelerated ray tracing, a technology that simulates realistic lighting effects, enhancing the visual quality of modern games. Apple asserts that the GPU maintains its superior performance while consuming 35 per cent less power, which could lead to longer battery life and more efficient operation.
Additionally, the A18 chipset features a 17 per cent increase in memory bandwidth compared to the A16 Bionic. Memory bandwidth refers to the amount of data that can be processed at once, and this increase should improve overall system performance, although Apple has not disclosed specific figures.
A18 Pro Chip: Advanced Features for Pro Models
The A18 Pro chipset, found in the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max, builds on the advancements of the A18 but with a few notable enhancements. Although the A18 Pro is said to offer more modest improvements compared to the A17 Pro, which was already a high-performing chip, it still brings significant upgrades.

Apple claims a 15 per cent increase in performance over the A17 Pro while using 20 per cent less power. The A18 Pro’s GPU, which includes an additional core compared to the A18, is reported to provide a 20 per cent boost in performance. Apple showcased the A18 Pro’s capabilities with the game *Death Stranding*, illustrating its ability to handle high-end graphics and complex gaming environments. The A18 Pro also includes a 16-core Neural Engine, similar to the A18, but with enhancements that Apple describes as “next-generation machine learning accelerators,” aimed at improving AI performance.
Furthermore, the A18 Pro chipset features enhanced memory bandwidth, matching the 17 per cent increase seen in the A18. This improvement facilitates better data handling and overall system efficiency.
