Hospitals Harnessing ‘Data Insights’ to Enhance Care

From improving outcomes to boosting staff engagement, hospital administrators across the country have harnessed the Hospital Data Insights platform launched by U.S. News & World Report in November 2013 to inform and enhance how they care for patients.

“It’s a really rich data set,” said Rahul Shah, vice president and chief quality and safety officer at Children’s National Health System, speaking Sunday at the U.S. News Hospital of Tomorrow conference in the nation’s capital. “With the HDI platform, it’s been a huge change.”

Hospital Data Insights gives subscribers deep access to the information behind the U.S. News & World Report’s Best Hospitals and Best Children’s Hospitals rankings. Health administrators can interact with and analyze historical data across a range of metrics, comparing multiple hospitals, seeing how different health centers stack up, and ultimately determining where and how they can improve.

“We don’t want our tools to be prescriptive; we’re not a hospital,” said Evan Jones, general manager of the Insights Group at U.S. News & World Report. “We just want to collect the data and show it back to hospitals so their experts can use those tools.”

Children’s National, for example, used Hospital Data Insights to improve responses to patient questionnaires, enhance staff satisfaction, transition to a more team-based approach to treatment, and together inform how to improve patient care, Shah said.

“That never really would have happened unless we identified some of the stumbling blocks,” Shah said of the move toward more collaboration between health workers. “The data identified an opportunity for us.”
