Apple’s recent announcement at the “It’s Glowtime” event introduced several exciting AI features under the Apple Intelligence umbrella, set to roll out with the iOS 18.1 update later this year.
While the iPhone 16 series and other devices will soon benefit from these advancements, some features will be available only through the upcoming update.
Key Features in iOS 18.1
-
Writing Tools: The AI-powered Writing Tools will enhance productivity across various Apple apps, including Mail, Messages, and Notes. Users can look forward to text summarisation, generation, and refinement. This feature will allow users to expand or rewrite messages and emails in different styles using AI-powered prompts.
-
Notification Summarisation: This feature aims to declutter notification stacks by prioritising and summarising them. AI will assess notifications, placing priority ones at the top and summarising them, so users don’t need to sift through details. It will also filter out notifications that require immediate attention.
-
Clean Up in Images: The Clean Up feature allows users to remove unwanted objects or people from photos. This tool can automatically identify and remove distractions or enable users to manually select items to be removed, seamlessly filling in the background.
-
AI Search in Photos: Users can perform natural language searches within their Photos app. This feature will allow for detailed queries about specific images, making it easier to find desired photos based on descriptive prompts.
-
Email Summary: AI will summarise lengthy email threads, highlighting key points to help users quickly grasp essential information.
-
Image Playground: This tool enables the creation of custom emojis and the generation of images based on user input, leveraging Apple Intelligence for creative expression.
-
Private Cloud Compute: This feature ensures user data privacy by processing data statelessly. The data is sent to a server for the sole purpose of fulfilling requests and is not retained after being returned to the device.
Future Updates
Beyond the iOS 18.1 release, Apple plans to introduce additional Apple Intelligence features sometimes down the line:
-
ChatGPT Integration: OpenAI’s ChatGPT will be integrated with Siri and system-wide Writing Tools. This will enhance Siri’s ability to perform web-related queries and answer complex questions. The integration will also facilitate image and document processing within various tools.
-
Smarter Siri: Siri will receive a significant upgrade, including improved conversational capabilities and the ability to manage more complex tasks across different apps.
-
Genmoji: This feature will convert rough sketches into detailed images and allow users to turn their photos into artistic interpretations.
-
Visual Intelligence: Similar to Google Lens, Visual Intelligence will be accessible via the new Camera Control button. Users can obtain information about captured images, make reservations, or book tickets. It will also integrate with ChatGPT for enhanced visual lookup and problem-solving, including mathematical queries.
These updates mark a significant step forward in Apple’s integration of AI, promising enhanced functionality and user experience across its device ecosystem.
