Brazil court orders Starlink’s bank accounts to be shut amid Elon Musk’s Feud with Supreme Court

Brazil’s top judicial authority has taken a dramatic step against Elon Musk’s Starlink, issuing an order that effectively freezes the internet satellite company’s finances in the country.

This decision, announced on Thursday, also prevents Starlink from conducting any financial transactions in Brazil, marking a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict between Musk’s enterprises and the Brazilian judiciary.

The root of this action stems from a standoff between Musk’s social media platform, X (formerly known as Twitter), and Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes.

On Wednesday, Justice Moraes issued a summons to X, giving the platform until Thursday evening to appoint a legal representative in Brazil. The failure to comply with this order would result in the suspension of X’s operations within the country.

Starlink, in a statement on X, expressed its concerns over the legal process, claiming that the order was issued secretly and without adhering to the due process of law as outlined in Brazil’s constitution.

The company argued that the order was based on an erroneous assumption that Starlink should be held accountable for fines imposed on X, fines which the company believes were unconstitutionally levied. Starlink has indicated its intention to challenge the ruling through legal means.

Crackdown on social media and the broader context
The tensions between Musk’s companies and the Brazilian judiciary have been brewing for some time. Brazilian authorities have intensified their crackdown on social media platforms, targeting accounts that disseminate misinformation and hate speech.

Justice Moraes has been at the forefront of these efforts, taking a hard line against platforms that fail to comply with court orders aimed at curbing harmful online content.

In April, Moraes announced an investigation into Musk for obstruction of justice after the former CEO of X publicly vowed to defy a court order that blocked certain accounts on the platform in Brazil. This ongoing conflict has now escalated to involve Starlink, with the Brazilian judiciary seemingly extending its reach to Musk’s other enterprises.

Musk’s response
The decision to freeze Starlink’s finances in Brazil could have far-reaching consequences, not only for the company but also for the millions of Brazilians who rely on its services. According to market research group Emarketer, around 40 million people in Brazil, roughly a fifth of the country’s population, use X on a monthly basis. This action against Starlink could potentially disrupt services for these users, further straining relations between Musk’s companies and Brazilian authorities.

Elon Musk took to X to voice his frustration, emphasizing that SpaceX and X are distinct entities with different shareholders. He criticized the ruling as an illegal action by what he referred to as the “dictator” Moraes, arguing that it unfairly punishes both other shareholders and the Brazilian populace. Musk’s statement underscores the tension between his enterprises and the Brazilian judiciary, highlighting the complex legal and ethical challenges faced by global tech companies operating in regions with varying regulatory environments.

Tensions not to die down anytime soon
The freezing of Starlink’s finances in Brazil is a stark reminder of the growing power of judicial authorities in regulating digital platforms and their associated businesses. As the situation develops, it remains to be seen how Musk’s companies will navigate these legal challenges and what impact this will have on their operations in Brazil and beyond.

This conflict sets the stage for a potentially prolonged legal battle that could have significant implications for the future of tech regulation in Brazil and other countries facing similar challenges. As Musk and his companies prepare to address the matter legally, the world watches closely to see how this high-stakes standoff will unfold.
